Birthday Blooms

My son and I have birthdays only 5 days apart in May, so we had fun celebrating together. I received several pretty plants from friends this year. Here is one favorite...

And a girlfriend was so thoughtful; she dropped this sweet bouquet by as well. I really love it!

A couple of friends sent this cool hydroponic appliance for my birthday (see photo below before I took it out of the box). I've never had anything like it before. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. I'll post my progress as the seeds sprout...

My son brought home a clay flower pot that he made in art class. I think it looks great with my new azalea.

As a treat I had lunch at Gumbo's in Round Rock, Texas. It's housed in a circa 1848 building that used to be an old stagecoach inn. The food is delicious! Their gardens outside are quite pleasant...

The stagecoach used to drive up to this limestone building over 150 years ago to the excited honking of geese according to the current owners. To see another beautiful photo of this old structure click here.

Finally, our friends in Scotland sent my son some lovely gifts for his birthday. Of course, our cat Mariah loved the box best of all. Behold, the shameless cat photo...

BTW, recently I watched the PBS documentary about Thomas Jefferson by Ken Burns. I was impressed with what Jefferson accomplished in his life. Someday I'd love to visit his home; especially his garden.

hi Dawn, happy belated birthday to both of you. Love the picture of the "cat in the box". Stella has to explore every box we bring into the house, too. Somehow she always fits in it. Greetings from sunny Germany, Andrea

Thank you, Andrea,
Aren't cats funny about boxes? I hope all is well with you in Germany. ~Dawn

Happy May Birthday, Dawn - it looks like you managed to celebrate, even with that bug still hanging on to plague you.

I enjoyed your links to Gumbo's and the history of the old Stage stop. We've passed it frequently but never been there - that may have to be remedied sometime this summer!

Maybe the ninety degree temps will eventually bake that germ out of your system!

Thank you Bill!
It was very happy indeed. :-)

Dear Annie,
Thanks for your well-wishes. Yes, this bug seems to like me a bit too well some reason.

I do recommend you try Gumbo's. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is quite pleasant. I love old buildings with lots of history and this one really fits the bill.

Hope you're having a wonderful summer. It's certainly sizzling so far!

Dawn, I hope the beautiful birthday presents are a harbinger of good things to come this year! I've seen those AeroGardens and wondered about them: keep us posted on how that goes! The heat being what it is, you should have plenty of indoor gardening time.

Thanks Pam & Libby!
The plants lifted my spirits.

Hi Cindy
I'd seen the AeroGarden Hydropondic kit as well. I'll try to take lots of photos.

You're right about the heat this year. It's making me long for the year of all the rain. *sigh* We're taking my son to Galveston Island before his spinal surgery. I hope it's not too much of a broil.

Happy Birthday Dawn. You have been blessed with many fine gifts and lots of love from friends.

I really like the art pottery project too. Those make the most heartfelt gifts.

Love your kitties. I had a Mariah too (not siamese) but I liked the name.

Hi Dawn,

I'm too late for birthday wishes but I'm glad you had such a nice one! Your cat is gorgeous. Loud?

Thanks Lisa at Greenbow
I am blessed, that is true. And very fortunate to have a child who can make a very useful pot like the one on the table there. It's my new favorite for sure. :-)

Hi Roses & Lilacs
Mariah *is* a good name. There's a song by that name as well. "They call the Wind Mariah!" I also call my Mariah "Monkey" sometimes, because...well because she gets into everything, but that's another story. ;-)

Welcome Dale's Garden!
I'm glad you dropped by. I'll be sure to visit & see your flowers as well. It's always nice to meet another gardener.

Thank you Mary,
No Mariah isn't usually loud, unless it's 2 a.m. and she's at the top of the stairs and she decides she needs to play Drop-the-Ball *NOOOOOOWWWW*! In which case...well....yes, then she can be rather...er...rather Vocal. Ahem. Okay: Loud. Truth is, I've been known to hunt her down in the middle of the night when she's yowling with a toy in her mouth, tuck her under my arm while swearing I'll never get another Siamese cat and lock her in the bedroom with me so she can't get away to go yowl somewhere else. But 96% of the time she's 'vewy vewy qwiet'. LOL!
