Useful Garden Pottery

I've been on the lookout for a large pot or urn for my front porch. This week I finally found one at Hill Country Water Gardens. It's always a joy to visit this unique nursery.

They seem to have everything I love; from plants...

...to pottery...

...complete with wildlife like this green anole...

...and fountains with very special goldfish and koi.

I was tempted to buy another birdbath for my back garden as well.

But in the end I decided on a pot from the clearance area. It has a hairline crack at the top, but since I don't plan on using it to hold water that's okay. Here it is on my porch.

The staff at Hill Country recommended that I add some pea gravel to the base as ballast. I may also try hanging a light-weight pot of flowers just inside the top. For now I'm enjoying the fact that I finally have something on my front porch besides my welcome mat.

BTW, I hope all of you had a very Happy St. Patrick's Day! Here's the Oxalis that's decorating our breakfast table this week.

Hi Dawn, what a gorgeous pot. I would worry about that hairline crack here in frost and thaw TN, but on your porch it should be fine. It makes a great focal point, even empty! I was just thinking about you as the preparations are being made for the Chicago Spring Fling. Hope to see you there? :-)

Hello Frances!

I must admit that the crack gave me pause as well. But since the pot will be relatively protected on my covered front porch and it was marked down to $75, (from several hundred), I couldn't resist.

I would love to see you in Chicago. We are having out-of-state guests that week, so it doesn't look like I'll make it. Who knows what great photos ops we might have discovered together this year. *wink* Hope you have a wonderful time!

Cheers!
Dawn

Beautiful pot for the porch Dawn. I don't think the crack will bother a thing. Most people will notice that beautiful glaze on the pot. It is very welcoming.

Beautiful pot! I was at Hill Country gardens just yesterday and was looking at the chipped pots section - those are marked WAY down! If you are putting the pot up against a wall and/or under a porch, nobody wil notice if it has a crack or is chipped and the elements should bother it.

I bought a hanging basket of purple fan flowers while I was there ;)

That is a GORGEOUS pot! And now I hear they have more chipped or cracked pots on clearance? Sounds like a road trip coming on... Thanks for the great post.

The new pot looks great, Dawn, very decorative on the porch. What a good idea you had of checking out Hill Country Water Gardens!

Thanks Garden Tips,
It's always easy to take colorful photos at that particular Water Garden & Nursery.

Hi Lisa!
I'm still trying to decide whether to camouflage the hairline crack with a bunch of plants flowing out of the top or just leave it as is.

Welcome Kelleye!
You're very kind. Glad you found my blog. You can check out a whole lot of other links to some beautiful Texas Gardening Blogs in the right-hand column of my site. Happy reading! :-)

Hello Cheryl,
I love your blog and am so glad to have found your site. Your site is very inspirational.

Dear Lee17,
So glad to hear you were able to visit Hill Country Water Gardens as well. Your hanging basket of purple fan flowers sounds delightful!

Hello Getgrounded,
Some of those cracked pots are very tempting indeed. It took a lot of self-control for me not to buy more than one, but I have a small garden so...I'll just waiting until I visit next time. Heehee!

Hi Tamara
Glad you could join me, virtually at least. Hope all is going well down in your section of Texas.

Dear Annie,
I always have my eye out for a bargain. It's like a treasure hunt. HCWG's is such a pretty place as well. My son really loves looking at the ponds & fish when we visit.

Happy Gardening!
Dawn
